How to Avoid the Biggest Misunderstanding in Road Freight Transport
In road freight transport, we encounter shipments almost daily that do not fill an entire truck. For such cases, the logistics market offers multiple solutions, yet in practice, the concepts of full truckload and less than truckload services are still frequently confused. However, these two shipping modes differ significantly in their operation, cost structure, transit times, and risk levels. What they have in common is that in both cases, goods from multiple consignors are transported on the same vehicle.
This misunderstanding does not only occur in small businesses. In many cases, even experienced procurement specialists or freight forwarding colleagues find it unclear when to choose full truckload services and when it makes more sense to consider less than truckload solutions. Below, we clarify the most important differences so you can always make the most optimal decision.
Less Than Truckload (LTL): Speed Without Transshipment
Less than truckload service – internationally abbreviated as LTL (Less Than Truckload) – is a shipping form where a consignment does not fill an entire vehicle, but the goods typically reach the shipper from the consignor to the consignee without transshipment. In this case, the cargo usually travels with the same vehicle from the loading point to the delivery point.
One of the greatest advantages of the LTL solution is speed and the safety that comes with less cargo handling. Since the goods pass through fewer loading points, the risk of damage, loss, or administrative error is significantly reduced. This is particularly important for urgent shipments, high-value products, or fragile goods.
The pricing of LTL services is often more flexible and depends on the current market situation. Prices are influenced by the capacity utilization of the selected route, the available free loading space, and whether the carrier has suitable vehicles operating on the appropriate route.
Full Truckload / Groupage Services: Network Cost-Effectiveness
Full truckload services – often referred to as groupage services – are, by contrast, a service built on a network system. In this solution, the goods do not go directly to the consignee, but pass through multiple logistics points. The shipment is typically picked up by a smaller collection vehicle and transported to a consolidation warehouse, where it is consolidated with other shipments. From there, it is forwarded in main line trucking towards the destination country or region, and after further warehouse handling and sorting, a local delivery vehicle performs the final delivery.
The greatest advantage of groupage services is cost-effectiveness. Network operations allow even smaller quantities of goods to move economically, even in international relations. That is why groupage services typically operate on a fixed tariff system with predetermined rate tables, so customers can also calculate the expected freight costs relatively accurately.
Weight and Volume Thresholds: Which Should You Choose?
In practice, it is clear that above certain volumes, groupage services are no longer necessarily the most economical solution. As a general rule, it makes sense to consider groupage services for shipments up to approximately 2–2.5 tonnes or roughly 5 pallets. Above that, it is often more advantageous and efficient to choose an LTL solution. For larger shipments, groupage rates may increase more steeply, while in LTL services, the cost of free loading space can be distributed more favorably.
It is important to emphasize that not all cargo is suitable for groupage services. One of the basic requirements of the groupage system is proper packaging and stackability. Shipment dimensions and weights are also subject to restrictions, as the collection and delivery vehicles may have smaller capacity than a standard semi-trailer. In the case of fragile, sensitive, oversized, or exceptionally high-value goods, multiple handling operations carry significant risk, making them difficult or impossible to handle in the groupage network.
Not Competitors, But Different Solutions
Choosing the right shipping method is therefore not exclusively a matter of price. In making the decision, you must consider the nature of the goods, urgency, sensitivity, delivery deadline, and risk factors. Full truckload and groupage services are not competitors, but solutions designed for different logistics needs. The true professional decision is not which is cheaper or faster in general, but which system is better suited to the particular shipment.
Market experience shows that choosing the right freight form alone can save significant costs and risks. For this reason, it is particularly important that customers do not make decisions based solely on price, but examine the entire logistics process.
